The crystal form of this compound is orthorhombic with space group P2(1)/c. This compound has been shown to have a high affinity for 3clpro and potent inhibitory activity against other proteases such as papain, subtilisin, and trypsin. The inhibition mechanism of 2-[(3-methoxyphenyl)amino]acetic acid is not fully understood but it has been hypothesized that this compound can bind to the active site of 3clpro via its moiety group. Modifications on the molecule have been shown to increase its inhibitory potency and affinity for 3clpro.
