It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of skin lesions caused by Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria because it inhibits bacterial growth through an antimicrobial effect. 1,4-Dimethyl 2-hydroxy-2-methylbutanedioate also has been used as a precursor for the synthesis of vitamin D3.
