It has been shown to have catalytic activity for the polymerization of dibenzoate and benzoate. 2-(3-Methylbutyl)-2-(propan-2-yl)propane-1,3-diol is also used as a catalyst in the synthesis of polyesters. 2-(3-Methylbutyl)-2-(propan-2-yl)propane-1,3-diol can be synthesized from propylene and butanol by reacting them in the presence of an acid catalyst.
