The antiviral effects are due to the inhibition of viral protein synthesis by 2CNB. 2CNB binds to amino acids in proteins, blocking the formation of amide bonds, which are necessary for protein synthesis. The photolysis of 1-bromo-5-iodonaphthalene in aqueous solution produces naphthalenes. This reaction is dependent on the pH of the solution and irradiation time. The solubility of 1-bromo-5-iodonaphthalene in water decreases when the pH increases.
