It reversibly binds to the active site of the ribosome and blocks the peptidyl transferase activity, which prevents polypeptide chain elongation. 4AMBD has been shown to have a cytotoxic effect on rat cardiomyocytes and leukemia cells. The molecular modelling studies indicate that it interacts with dithioerythritol in the ribosome's active site.
