It can also be used for the production of solvents, such as ethanol and methanol. The compound is synthesized from a reaction between p-toluenesulfonic acid and magnesium chloride to produce magnesium sulfate, which reacts with ethyl bromide to form spiro[2.5]octane-7-carboxylic acid. Spiro[2.5]octane-7-carboxylic acid can also be synthesized by reacting potassium tert butoxide with isobutyryl chloride in ether at room temperature.
