MMPD reacts with 4-methylbenzenesulfonic acid to produce the corresponding sulfonyl chloride and an aldehyde, which can be oxidized to produce a carboxylic acid. This reaction has been shown to be efficient and selective. The optimal reaction time is 2 hours at room temperature in order to yield the desired product with minimal amounts of byproducts.
