The compound has been found to undergo two types of reactions, cyclization and acyclic rearrangement. The β-unsaturated phosphane undergoes cyclization at elevated temperatures, producing an unsaturated ketone. The acyclic rearrangement produces an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde through elimination of water and release of hydrogen gas. This reaction can be observed in the spectra as a protonated carbonyl band at 1725 cm−1. In addition to these two reactions, [(2-bromophenyl)(dimethylamino)phosphanyl]dimethylamine also forms an adduct with phenylacetaldehyde. The reaction products have been characterized by two-dimensional NMR experiments, and the experimentally determined structures were confirmed by calculation. The spectroscopic data for 1 were also obtained. The study was motivated by the need to find a replacement for benzene in the production of polystyrene, a widely used plastic material.
