It has been used to synthesize the lipase inhibitor ursodeoxycholic acid and cyclohexanones. The enzyme 1-methyl-2,3-dihydro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4(1H)-one is able to catalyze the hydrolysis of esters and transesterification of esters.
