The product was purified by recrystallization from ethyl acetate and ethanol. This compound is a multigram synthetic template for the synthesis of imidazoles, triazoles, and pyrazoles. Deprotection of the hydroxymethyl group at position 4 yields the corresponding amine or alcohol.
