It prevents the virus from replicating, and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. But-3-ene-1-sulfonamide binds to the NS5B protein in the viral ribonucleoprotein complex, which stops viral replication by inhibiting RNA synthesis. The drug also inhibits the production of new virus particles by binding to the surface of cells in a noncompetitive manner.
