The binding of 2-benzoyl-1,3-indanedione to DNA occurs via the nitrogen nucleophile on its benzene ring attacking the base of an adenine or guanine base pair. This leads to the formation of an amide bond between the indane group and one of the bases. The primary amine group on this molecule can also react with other amines to form secondary amides.
