CVV infection in sheep causes spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and congenital defects. The virus is neuroinvasive in humans and can cause central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as encephalitis and meningitis and in rare cases has caused death. There appears to be a high infection rate (up to 18% of population) in virus-endemic areas.
