Eco-Friendly Catalysts: Revolutionizing chemical and environmental applications
27 February 2026
Catalysts are essential for accelerating chemical reactions without altering the reaction itself. However, many traditional catalysts depend on rare metals or generate unwanted waste. Hence, eco-friendly alternatives are required, such as green catalysts.
What makes these green catalysts special?
Recent advances have brought new types of catalysts to the forefront:
- Biocatalysts, such as enzymes, are highly selective and efficient. These enzymes serve as catalysts in nature. They can catalyze reactions under mild conditions, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals, all while minimizing toxic waste production.
- Iron-based catalysts, such as magnetite, olivine, and ilmenite have gained interest due to their low cost, higher reactivity, and stability. Providing an alternative option to heavy metals catalysts.
- Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have also gained interest as catalyst supports due to their high porosity, higher surface area, and ability to alter the size and shape of pores. Currently, metal organic framework (MOF) is extensively used as a catalyst because of its three-dimensional porous structure, which is self-assembled by a metal source and a carbon source through coordinated bonds. A recent application of this innovation is the CoFe-LDH@Ni-MOF catalyst, produced by combining cobalt–iron layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) with a nickel-MOF. When tested in a microbial fuel cell, it delivered a maximum power density of 211 mW m⁻², compared to only 83 mW m⁻² for the Ni-MOF alone. This shows how hybrid MOF systems can significantly enhance catalytic performance.
- Biochar-based catalysts can be produced from biomass. These catalysts provide reusability, high tolerance against temperature, inexpensiveness and surface functionality, which make it an effective catalyst for biofuel production
These innovations reflect a major shift in chemical technology, toward solutions that protect the environment while maintaining industrial efficiency.
