Description:β-Defensin 2 (BD-2) (human), an antimicrobial peptide, is expressed throughout the epithelia of many organs. BD-2 is inducible upon contact of keratinocytes with Gram-negative bacteria or proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β. Elevated expression has been detected in lesional epidermal keratinocytes both in psoriasis and in the inflamed skin of mastitis.
