Acenaphthene is a five-membered, isomeric, organometallic compound that has been shown to undergo dehydrogenation and acylation reactions. The catalytic reaction of acenaphthene with acid chloride in the presence of aluminum chloride yields 5-acetylacenaphthene. 5-Acetylacenaphthene has been synthesized by acetylating acenaphthylene with an acetyl halide in the presence of a base. The parameters for this process are the temperature and concentration of reactants. The cyclopentane ring can be observed in the nmr spectra for 5-acetylacenaphthene.
