Amicoumacin B is a complex antibiotic that has high cytotoxicity against subtilis and other species of bacteria. It is an asymmetric synthesis of two molecules, amicoumacin A and amicoumacin B, which are both produced by the bacterium Streptomyces sp. Amicoumacin B has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cervical cancer cells in vitro. This antibiotic is composed of a hydroxyl group and an ester linkage between the hydroxycarboxylic acid moiety and the amino moiety. It has been shown to have a high blood level in humans, with a type strain from human plasma showing an enantiomer ratio of 97:3 in favor of the levo-amino acid. The genus Streptomyces includes many species including S. griseus, S. lividans, S. viridochromogenes, and S. violaceoruber.
