Azithromycin N-oxide is a metabolite of azithromycin. It is the first n-oxide to be found in humans that has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Azithromycin N-oxide is formed by hydrolysis of azithromycin, with plasma proteins being responsible for the conversion process. The activation energy for this reaction was found to be -10.8 kJ/mol, which falls within the range of values reported in the literature for other hydrolytic reactions involving carboxylic acids. The compound was also found to be acidic and it has been shown that it can be used in wastewater treatment as an alternative to chlorine. Azithromycin N-oxide has been validated using liquid chromatography and its impurities have been harmonized with those of other pharmaceuticals that are also used in wastewater treatment processes.
