Famphur is a chemical agent that has been used for the control of ticks and lice. It is toxic to mammals, but does not affect insects. Famphur is an insecticide that can be used in tick-control programs for cattle and sheep, with efficacy rates of about 90%. It also has anti-parasitic properties. Famphur is commonly used as a laboratory reagent for the preparation of biological samples for analysis by gas chromatography. Famphur also acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme urease, which breaks down urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. This leads to increased levels of urea nitrogen in urine, which can be measured using an analytical method such as chemical ionization or carbonyl group detection.
