Conopharyngine is an indole alkaloid that is used as a mood stabilizer in the treatment of depression. It has shown potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Conopharyngine also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Conopharyngine has been shown to have long term effects on depressive symptoms, with a significant decrease in blood concentrations after several weeks of treatment. The long term safety and efficacy of this drug has not been established.
