1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that has been shown to be toxic to bacteria. It is used as a solvent and in the production of other chemicals. The toxicity of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane is due to its ability to react with oxygen nucleophiles such as hydrogen fluoride to form free radicals that cause cellular damage. Further studies have shown that this compound causes genotoxic effects in bacteria by interfering with transcription and polymerase chain reactions. These effects are not observed in mammalian cells because they do not contain the same deoxyribonucleotide repair enzyme system.
