2-Methoxybiphenyl is a diphenyl ether that has been found to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. It reacts with biphenyl to form 2-methoxybiphenyl-4,4'-diol and 2-methoxybiphenyl-4,4'-diol. This compound inhibits the growth of certain Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The reaction products are also active against some Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. The reaction product is used for the diagnosis of infectious diseases by detecting the presence of these bacterial strains in samples. Reaction products can be detected using surface methodology (e.g., immunoassay) or by using solid phase microextraction techniques. These methods require the use of methyl nicotinate or hydroxyl groups as specific binding partners with the bacterial strain under investigation.>>END>>
