Azinphos-methyl is a chemical that inhibits the enzymes involved in the synthesis of proteins. It is used as an insecticide and acaricide, but its use is now restricted to veterinary medicine. Azinphos-methyl has been shown to inhibit the formation of polypeptides, protein synthesis, and DNA transcription and replication. Azinphos-methyl has also been found to be genotoxic in experimental models and has caused tumors in laboratory animals.
Azinphos-methyl inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase by covalently binding to it. This prevents the enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, which leads to increased levels of acetylcholine at synapses and eventually death due to respiratory failure.
Azinphos-methyl is toxic to aquatic organisms because it causes oxygen depletion in water due to high rates of decomposition under aerobic conditions.
