Description:Hexabromobenzene is a flame retardant that has been used as a wastewater treatment agent. It has been found to be effective for the removal of phenols, which are organic compounds that are difficult to remove from water. Hexabromobenzene binds to metal hydroxides and forms a complex that can be removed by natural compounds or hydrogenated hexabromobenzene. Hexabromobenzene also debrominates in vivo, which leads to its elimination from the body. This process is initiated by enzymatic cleavage of the benzene ring followed by oxidation of the bromide group. Chronic exposure to hexabromobenzene led to erythrocyte membrane damage and decreased levels of hemoglobin in CD-1 mice.
