Hydrogen sulfate can be produced by hydrolysis and oxidation of 3-sulfophthalic acid (3SPA). 3SPA can be synthesized from 2-sulfophenylacetic acid (2SPA) using chloride, zirconium and halides. The methoxy groups on the sulfur atom in 3SPA allow for hydrogen bonding with water molecules, which causes electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to show a high resistance to current flow.
