Isobutyl isobutyrate is a reactive chemical that inhibits the function of enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit the insulin-degrading enzyme and thus increase insulin resistance in vitro. The reaction solution was treated with cationic surfactants, radiation, and glycol ethers before being subjected to surface methodology. Isobutyl isobutyrate was found to be an effective catalyst for this reaction. The mechanism of the reaction involves hydrogen fluoride (HF) attacking the fatty acid chains on the surface of the solid catalyst, which then reacts with epoxide groups on the isobutyrate molecule to form a new molecule called an epoxydiol ester.
