Variamine Blue B Base is a redox indicator that changes color in response to changes in the oxidation-reduction potential of the environment. It is used as an optical sensor for measuring the redox potentials of various compounds, and is commonly used in biochemistry and analytical chemistry. The change in color is based on the reduction or oxidation of a cationic surfactant, which contains a molecule with an attached phenyl group. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of a dinucleotide phosphate from two molecules of phosphoric acid. This dinucleotide phosphate then reacts with p-nitrophenyl phosphate to form a blue colored product. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) can be used to measure changes in redox potentials using Variamine Blue B Base as it is sensitive to changes in molecular size and charge density.
