Description:2-Ethoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran is a chemical solvent that is used in the manufacture of polymers. It can be used to produce high molecular weight polymers by cationic polymerization. 2-Ethoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran has been shown to cause cancer in animals and may also be carcinogenic for humans. It has been found to cause chorioallantoic membrane tumors in chickens and bifunctional tumors in rats. Chloride ions are required for the initiation of the polymerization process. The synthetic route to 2-ethoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H pyran involves the reaction of lysine with chloromethyl methyl ether followed by hydrolysis of the ester group. This method is not efficient as it requires an acid catalyst and a metal such as magnesium or calcium or zinc chloride or zinc
