4-Methyl-2-pentyl acetate (4MP) is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of esters. It has been used as a solvent in biochemical research and as a polarizer in liquid crystals. The mixture of 4MP with hydrochloric acid reacts with boron nitride to form 4-methyl-2-pentanol, which is a reagent for the synthesis of pyridine. 4MP has also been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be related to its hydroxyl groups. This chemical is found in the atmosphere and acts as an intermediate for the formation of ozone. 4MP can be carcinogenic in rats, but it does not have any significant effects on human cells.
