1-Dodecanol acetate (1DA) is a reactive functional group that has been used to prepare microcapsules. These capsules are able to bind to the surface of cryptococcus neoformans and cause them to break down. The binding constants for 1DA with cryptococcus neoformans have been determined by measuring the equilibrium concentrations of 1DA and its monomers, dodecanol and acetate, in the presence of different amounts of microcapsules. The reaction between 1DA and cryptococcus neoformans was found to be irreversible. This process can be used as a sample preparation technique for studying other organisms that react in a similar way.
