Tolueneazosulfonamide is a derivative of tolueneazo-2-naphthylamine. It is used as a diagnostic agent for c. glabrata, which is also known as piedra or calcific band keratopathy. Tolueneazosulfonamide has been shown to have a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of the eye lens, and this may be the reason for its use in the diagnosis of piedra. It has been shown to cause cell death by inhibiting host protein synthesis. This drug also has an inhibitory effect on some oral pathogens and can be used for the treatment of ocular infections caused by these bacteria.
