Erythromycin is an antimicrobial agent that is effective against a wide variety of bacteria and some protozoa. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing protein synthesis. Erythromycin has been used for the treatment of a number of infectious diseases in humans, including chronic pulmonary infections, streptococcal pharyngitis, infectious diarrhea, and choroidal neovascularization. It also has diagnostic uses in humans.
Erythromycin is also used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. This drug has been shown to be useful for treating Streptococcus pyogenes infection in horses and for treating Streptococcus equi infection in horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats, rabbits and other animals.
Erythromycin binds to fatty acids as well as hydroxyl groups on the cell wall membrane or cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria.
