Copper(II) 2-ethylhexanoate is a copper complex that is used as an intermediate in the preparation of anilines. It can be prepared by dehydrogenating chlorobenzene using CuCl and H2O2 as a catalyst. The reaction yields a mixture of products, including hexane, ethylbenzene, and ethylhexanoic acid. Copper(II) 2-ethylhexanoate can also be synthesized by reductive elimination from various substituted acetylenes using CuCl and NaBH4 in DMF at high concentrations. The optimum conditions for this reaction are temperature 80°C, substrate concentration 3 g/L, and nucleophile concentration 1M. The reaction produces multigram quantities of the product with high purity. Copper(II) 2-ethylhexanoate has functional groups such as carboxylate and alkene moieties that give it photochemical properties.
