Phthivazid is an anti-parasitic and anti-microbial agent. It is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Phthivazid has been shown to be effective against a number of bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella typhi. In vitro studies have also shown that phthivazid can inhibit the replication of viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), influenza A virus (IAV), and HIV-1. The mechanism of action for this drug is not currently known.
