Phenylephrine is a synthetic drug that is used to diagnose mucopurulent nasal discharge, or the presence of pus and other material in the nose. It can also be used to diagnose hypertrophy of the turbinates, which are the small, finger-like projections that line the nasal cavity and help warm and humidify inhaled air. Phenylephrine is an ophthalmologist's diagnostic tool for nerve injury, but it has also been used as a treatment for cardiovascular disorders. Phenylephrine can be immobilized on a glass slide with an ophthalmologist's diagnostic agent called erythromycin and then examined under a microscope by a physician. This drug can also be used to diagnose chlamydia infections in infants by examining their spinal fluid. The hallmark of chlamydia infection is neuronal cell death. Diagnostic tests have shown that phenylephrine can cause this cell death by inhibiting its energy production process through inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport chain enzymes.
