In the gas phase, this fluorophore exhibits fluorescence lifetimes of 3 nanoseconds, while in polar solvents such as water or ethanol it has lifetimes of 100 nanoseconds. This difference is due to the polarity of the solvent, which affects the orientation of dipole moments and electron-acceptor interactions with nitrogen atoms in the molecule.
