Description:

2-Hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid (HPPPA) is a naturally occurring molecule that is found in coffee, red wine, and grapefruit. It has been shown to be involved in the diagnosis of mitochondrial dysfunction by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species. HPPPA inhibits wild type strains at physiological levels and can be used as an inhibitor for miapaca-2 cells. HPPPA also inhibits mitochondrial function in vitro by disrupting the respiratory chain and reducing ATP synthesis. HPPPA is a biocompatible polymer that can be used in vivo as a drug delivery system for treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Multivariate logistic regression analysis has shown that chlorogenic acids are responsible for HPPPA's effects on mitochondria.
