Bromacil is a herbicide that is used for wastewater treatment. It is also used to control the growth of bacteria in soil and water. Bromacil inhibits bacterial growth by binding cytoplasmic enzymes, especially those involved in fatty acid synthesis, and by inhibiting photosynthesis. Bromacil also has genotoxic effects on bacterial DNA, as demonstrated by an increase in the number of chromosomal aberrations observed in Escherichia coli cells incubated with bromacil. This compound binds to adenosine A3 receptors, which may be responsible for the inhibition of photosynthetic activity. The cytotoxicity of bromacil is not related to its ability to bind DNA but rather its ability to bind ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis.
