δ-HCH is a persistent organic pollutant that has been found in wastewater treatment plants and the environment. δ-HCH is genotoxic and can cause structural changes to DNA, which may be due to its ability to react with free radicals. δ-HCH reacts with anhydrous sodium (Na) to form a redox system that is capable of oxidizing lipid chains in cells. This reaction mechanism may be responsible for the genotoxic effects of δ-HCH. The presence of these reactive compounds has been detected by solid phase microextraction, and it has been shown that δ-HCH reacts with Na to form new compounds, such as γ-hydrochlormethoxyacrolein.
