Tacrine is a drug that belongs to the class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is a cholinergic that is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Tacrine is potent inducers of cytochrome P450 enzymes and has been shown to have a significant drug interaction with α1-acid glycoprotein, which may lead to an increased risk of bleeding. Tacrine also inhibits neuronal death by binding to tetrahydroaminoacridine, which prevents it from being oxidized and then converted into hydrogen peroxide. This leads to an increase in acetylcholine levels and therefore improved cognitive function.
