Phenyl-P-benzoquinone is a trypsin inhibitor that has been shown to reduce locomotor activity in mice. It also has an inhibitory effect on microglia and reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and TNF-α. Phenyl-P-benzoquinone has potent inhibitory activity against a gene product involved in nociception and inflammatory responses. This compound has been shown to be effective in wild type mice, but not in mutant mice lacking the gene for protease trypsin. Phenyl-P-benzoquinone may also have antinociceptive properties due to its ability to inhibit acid phosphatases that release protons from acidic phs. The acetate extract of tephrosia ulmacea, which contains phenyl-P-benzoquinone, was shown to be more potent than phenylphenol at inhibiting the enzyme involved in prostagland
