The product is an alcohol with three hydroxyl groups, which can be used for different reactions. 3,3,3-Trifluoropropane-1,2-diol has an active hydrogen bond that can form a hydrogen bond with an amino acid or phosphate group in a protein. It also has a trifluoromethyl group that can react with other compounds and cause them to be more toxic than they would otherwise be. 3,3,3-Trifluoropropane-1,2-diol has been shown to react with glutamic acid in model studies to form a cyclic amine.
