Polyporenic acid C is a trifluoroacetic acid that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Polyporenic acid C is a natural compound isolated from the fungus Polyporus umbellatus. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells in vitro and to be cytotoxic for several types of cancer cells, including breast cancer and skin cancer. This compound also inhibits the energy metabolism, mitochondrial membrane potential, and induces apoptosis in HL-60 cells. The mechanism of action is not yet known but may involve inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis or induction of oxidative stress.
