Cafestol is a substance found in the coffee bean. It has been shown to induce the production of growth factor-β1 (GF-β1) and potent inducers, such as mcl-1 protein, and has been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines and reduce the expression of inflammatory genes. Cafestol also exhibits antiinflammatory activity which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis and decrease leukocyte chemotaxis. In addition, cafestol has been shown to have antioxidant properties that are attributed to its chlorogenic acids content. This substance has been implicated in the prevention of bowel disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and cancer. The mechanism for these effects is not yet clear but may involve inhibition of cell proliferation or induction of apoptosis by binding with DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro. Cafestol also inhibits angiogenesis by interfering with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signaling pathways.
