Description:Canthin-6-one is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid that has been shown to inhibit transcription. The natural compound does not exhibit any antimicrobial activity, but has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Canthin-6-one binds to and inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, preventing the replication of DNA. This compound also suppresses the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6 and TNFα from macrophages. Canthin-6-one has also been shown to have matrix effects on mass spectroscopy methods, such as liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS).
