Coclaurine is a natural alkaloid that has been shown to have potent antioxidant properties. Coclaurine is present in coclaurine-rich plants, such as the leaves of Laurus nobilis, and can be extracted from these plants. Coclaurine has been tested in vitro for its hydrogen bonding interactions with chlorogenic acids and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids. Hydrogen bonding interactions are known to play an important role in the metabolism of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids. Coclaurine also has a number of other potential medicinal uses, including treatment of infectious diseases and metabolic disorders. Coclaurine may be able to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
