Hydrofuramide reacts with amines and imines to form furyl compounds, which are cytotoxic agents. Furfural is produced as a byproduct of this reaction and can react with DNA, causing a break in the strands of the molecule. This break in the DNA molecule prevents cells from dividing and leads to cell death. Hydrofuramide also binds covalently with 5-membered heteroaryl groups, such as taxol, which inhibits the growth of cells by preventing RNA transcription and protein synthesis.
