18-Pentatriacontanone is a dibenzopentacontane that has been used as an ingredient in detergent compositions. It exhibits antimicrobial activity and is effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses. 18-Pentatriacontanone is a light-emitting material, which can be synthesized by reacting with hydrochloric acid and methyl ethyl ketone in the presence of a film-forming polymer such as sodium carbonate. The light emission is due to the nitrogen atoms present in the molecule. The synthesis methods for 18-pentatriacontanone are varied, but it can be prepared by reacting an organic compound containing at least one fatty acid with an amine or ammonia gas. The reaction mechanism for this process involves chloromethylation of the substrate followed by elimination of chlorine from the product. This reaction proceeds via a free radical mechanism with particle formation.
