Description:Dehydroergosterol, also known as DHE, is a cholesterol derivative that is a pro-apoptotic protein. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells by binding to the ATP-binding cassette transporter and MCL-1 protein. DHE binds to cholesterol and changes its phase transition temperature from liquid to solid at physiological levels, which may be due to its anti-cancer properties. The pro-apoptotic effect of DHE was demonstrated in a model system using skin cancer cells. This compound also has been shown to have anti-cancer activity against colorectal adenocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo.
