Description:Beta-amino-1H-indole-3-propanol (BAP) is a quinolizidine alkaloid that is an intermediate in the synthesis of a number of biologically active compounds, including the anti-viral drug idoxuridine. BAP has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of protein synthesis and is used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It also has been shown to have a beneficial effect on fertility in women and can be used as a contraceptive. BAP has also been shown to inhibit inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and reducing proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). Beta-amino-1H-indole-3-propanol can be degraded by microorganisms into carbon dioxide or organic acids.
